Mould on Media

Writer: Ross HendersonRoss Henderson

We do receive some interesting jobs at Retro Media. Some are interesting because of their age. But we recently were given a VHS tape to digitize.

When we inspected the tape, before it was digitized, we noticed that there was a large amount of mould on the tape inside the cassette.

We were concerned if there was mould on the tape itself, so we inspected this too.

So we decided to clean the tape. This involved removing the tape from the cassette and placing the reels into our tape cleaning machine.

Cleaning the tape

With this machine, the tape is cleaned on both sides with a small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol.

After a while, the tape was seen to be clean and free from mould, so after both sides were cleaned, the cassette was reassembled and placed in our VCR. We were concerned that the recording on the tape might have been lost, but thankfully, it played ok.

If you have some old tapes which are covered in mould and would like to see the recordings again, why not send us a message here and we can discuss your requirements?
