Digitising VHS Tapes: How We Preserve Your Precious Memories

For many of us, VHS tapes are more than just old pieces of plastic. They contain birthdays, weddings, family holidays, school performances and everyday moments that would otherwise exist only in our memories.

The problem is that VHS tapes were never designed to last forever. Magnetic tape gradually deteriorates, while VHS players are becoming increasingly difficult to find and maintain. If you have a collection of tapes tucked away in a cupboard or loft, now is a good time to think about digitising them.

What does Digitising a VHS tape mean?

Digitising VHS means converting the analogue video and audio stored on a cassette into a digital video file. Instead of needing a VCR and television to watch your memories, you can store them on a computer, external hard drive or other digital storage device.

Digital copies can also be backed up and shared much more easily with family and friends.

Why Should you Digitise VHS tapes?

VHS tapes deteriorate over time

VHS uses magnetic tape, and magnetic media naturally degrades. Heat, humidity, dust and improper storage can all accelerate the process. Even tapes that appear to be in good condition may eventually develop problems such as colour loss, dropouts, distorted audio or a poor picture.

Digitising a tape does not stop the original cassette from ageing, but it gives you a new copy before further deterioration occurs.

VHS Players are Becoming Harder to Find

VCRs are no longer manufactured on anything like the scale they once were. Working machines can still be found, but they are increasingly old and may require maintenance.

Having your memories stored digitally means you won't have to rely on a working VCR in the future.

Digital files are easier to share

Once your tapes have been converted, you can send copies to relatives, upload them to private cloud storage or watch them on modern televisions, computers and phones.

A single family recording can suddenly become much easier for everyone to enjoy.

Of course you can - if you have the required equipment and also are technically competent.
